How it is worked out

Set-off between income types
Intraday losses stay with intraday. An F&O loss comes off intraday profit, then other income, then short-term gains, then long-term gains. A short-term capital loss comes off any gain, and a long-term loss only long-term gains. Crypto losses are ignored.
Slab income
Salary (after the standard deduction), F&O, intraday and other income are added and taxed at slab rates. Old-regime deductions reduce this slab income only.
Special-rate income
Short-term equity gains at 20%, long-term equity gains at 12.5% above Rs 1.25 lakh, other long-term gains at 12.5%, and crypto at 30%, each with no deductions. If slab income is below the basic exemption limit, the shortfall reduces the equity gains but never crypto.
Rebate and cess
The Section 87A rebate applies only to tax on slab income, then 4% cess is added on everything.

Common questions

What does this estimator do that the separate calculators do not?

It adds up every income type a trader can have in one place: salary, F&O and intraday business income, short-term and long-term equity gains, other long-term gains, crypto, and other income. It applies the right rate and set-off rule to each and shows the total tax under the new and old regimes, so you can see the whole picture instead of one stream at a time.

How is each type of income taxed?

Salary, F&O, intraday and other income are taxed at slab rates. Short-term gains on listed equity are taxed at 20%, long-term gains on listed equity at 12.5% above Rs 1.25 lakh, other long-term gains at 12.5%, and crypto at a flat 30%. Cess of 4% is added on the total.

How are losses treated?

An F&O (non-speculative) loss is set off against intraday profit, other income and then capital gains. An intraday (speculative) loss can only be set off against speculative profit, so it is carried forward. A short-term capital loss can be set off against any capital gain, a long-term capital loss only against long-term gains. Crypto losses cannot be set off against anything.

Why does a large gain sometimes show no tax?

If your other income is below the basic exemption limit, the unused part of that limit can be used against short-term and long-term equity gains. So a resident individual with a small total income can have some of those gains fall inside the limit. This does not apply to crypto.

How does the Section 87A rebate work here?

The rebate reduces only the tax on income taxed at slab rates. It is never given against tax on special-rate income such as short-term and long-term capital gains. Under the new regime it is up to Rs 60,000 when total income is up to Rs 12 lakh, with marginal relief just above that, and under the old regime up to Rs 12,500 when total income is up to Rs 5 lakh.

What is not included?

Surcharge (this page flags when total income is above Rs 50 lakh), the senior citizen slabs, Section 44AD, deductions other than the one old-regime amount you enter, and any brought-forward losses. It assumes a resident individual under 60 and financial year 2025-26.

An estimate, not a return. It assumes a resident individual under 60 for FY 2025-26, adds no surcharge and applies no brought-forward losses. The Section 87A rebate limits and the rule that it is not given against special-rate income were checked against the Income Tax Department's published guidance.
