Understanding the calculation
- SIP
- Each month: balance = (balance + instalment) times (1 + return/12). With step-up, the instalment is multiplied by (1 + step-up) at the start of every year after the first.
- Lumpsum
- Amount times (1 + return) to the power of the years.
- Today's money
- Final value divided by (1 + inflation) to the power of the years.
Common questions
How is the SIP value worked out?
Each month's instalment is invested at the start of the month and the balance grows at your expected return divided by 12 every month. With a step-up, the instalment rises by your chosen percentage at the start of each year. The result is before tax and fund costs.
Is the expected return guaranteed?
No. Equity funds do not give a fixed return, and a single number is only an assumption. Try a low, a middle and a high figure to see the spread. Returns in the past do not guarantee future returns.
What does step-up do?
It raises your SIP by a fixed percentage every year, so it grows with your income. Even a small step-up can add a large amount over a long period, because the later, larger instalments are invested too.
What is the inflation-adjusted value?
It is the final value divided by (1 + inflation) for each year, so it shows what the money might buy in today's terms. It is usually much lower than the headline figure.
Does this include tax?
No. Gains on equity funds are taxed as capital gains when you sell, at 20% short-term and 12.5% long-term above Rs 1.25 lakh a year, so the amount you keep will be lower. Use the Capital Gains Calculator for that.
Can I use the lumpsum mode for a fixed deposit?
It compounds a single amount once a year at your rate, so it fits any yearly-compounding investment. Interest on a fixed deposit is taxable each year, which this page does not model.
