A worked example

Say you deposit the full Rs 1,50,000 PPF limit as a single lump sum every April for 15 years, at the current 7.1% rate. Because each year's deposit is credited interest for the whole year and the balance compounds annually, the account grows to about Rs 40,68,209 by maturity. You put in Rs 22,50,000 across the 15 years, so the extra Rs 18,18,209 is interest, entirely tax-free.

Understanding the calculation

PPF
Interest is added month by month on the balance and credited at the end of each financial year, then compounds. A lump sum in April earns a full year of interest on the deposit.
EPF
Your 12% plus the employer's share that goes into EPF (12% of wages less the pension part). Interest is added monthly on the running balance and credited yearly.
NPS
Contributions are invested each month at the return you enter. At retirement the annuity share buys a monthly pension at your annuity rate, and the rest is the lump sum.

Common questions

What is the current PPF rate?

The PPF rate for October to December 2026 is 7.1% a year, unchanged for ten straight quarters, compounded annually. The government sets it each quarter, so the field is editable, and you should check the latest rate.

How is PPF interest calculated?

Interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month and credited at the end of the financial year. So deposits made by the 5th of a month earn interest for that month. The yearly maximum you can deposit is Rs 1.5 lakh and the term is 15 years.

What is the EPF rate?

The EPF interest rate declared for FY 2025-26 is 8.25%. The rate is decided every year, so you can edit it. EPF interest is calculated on the monthly running balance and credited at the end of the year.

How is the employer's share of EPF worked out?

The employer also pays 12% of wages, but part of it, 8.33% of wages up to Rs 15,000 (at most Rs 1,250 a month), goes to the pension scheme and not to your EPF balance. This page counts only the part that goes into the EPF balance.

Is NPS return fixed?

No. NPS returns depend on the funds and markets you pick, so the return field is an assumption. The share you must use to buy an annuity at retirement and the annuity rate you get also vary, so both are editable and you should check the current rules.

Is the interest tax-free?

PPF interest is tax-free. EPF interest is tax-free on yearly employee contributions up to a limit, above which interest on the excess is taxable. NPS tax treatment depends on the type of withdrawal. This page ignores tax.

An illustration, not a forecast. The PPF rate of 7.1% (October to December 2026) and the EPF rate of 8.25% (FY 2025-26, the latest declared) come from published announcements and change over time, and NPS returns and annuity terms are assumptions. Tax is not modelled.
