Crypto TDS Calculator (Section 194S)

See the 1% TDS deducted on your crypto sales, how it compares with the tax you owe on your gains, and how much it drags on the capital you trade with. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Your crypto sales this financial year

Taxable gain here means the profit on your gaining sales; crypto losses cannot be set off against gains, so leave losses out.

A worked example

Say you sell Rs 20,00,000 of crypto across 40 trades this year, for a total gain of Rs 1,50,000. The exchange deducts 1% TDS on every sale regardless of profit or loss, so Rs 20,000 is withheld before you ever see it. Your actual tax is 30% plus cess on the gain, about Rs 46,800, so the TDS covers less than half of what you owe and you still need to pay roughly Rs 26,800 more when you file, on top of the Rs 20,000 that was already tied up through the year.

Understanding the calculation

The 1% deduction
1% of the total sale value, once your sales in the year go above the threshold. It is a credit against your final tax, not an extra cost.
Your final tax
A flat 30% on the gain plus 4% cess, with no set-off for losses, under Section 115BBH. The Crypto Tax Calculator works this out from your trades using FIFO.
Net payable or refund
Tax on your gain minus the TDS already deducted. A negative result is a refund, paid after you file and your return is processed.
The reinvestment chart
Assumes each sale's proceeds go straight into the next trade and that every sale is about the average size. It shows tradable capital falling by 1% a sale until the TDS credit is claimed.

Common questions

What is TDS on crypto under Section 194S?

When you sell a virtual digital asset such as crypto, the buyer or the exchange handling the trade must deduct tax at source at 1% of the sale value, and deposit it with the government. It applies to the sale value, not to your profit, so it is deducted even when you sell at a loss.

Is there a minimum before TDS applies?

Yes. No TDS applies if the total value of your crypto sales in the financial year does not exceed Rs 50,000 for a specified person (broadly, an individual or HUF without business income, or whose business turnover is under the audit limit), or Rs 10,000 for everyone else. Above that, 1% is deducted.

Is TDS an extra tax on top of the 30%?

No. TDS is a prepayment. Your actual tax on crypto gains is a flat 30% plus 4% cess under Section 115BBH. The TDS deducted is credited against that when you file your return, and if the TDS is more than your tax you get the difference back as a refund.

Why can TDS be more than my tax?

TDS is 1% of every sale, whatever the profit. If you trade often with small gains, or make losses, the TDS can exceed the tax due, and the extra is refunded only after you file and your return is processed. Until then that money is tied up.

Why does TDS shrink the capital I can trade with?

If you sell and put the proceeds straight into your next trade, 1% of each sale has already gone to TDS, so you have about 1% less to trade with each time, until the credit comes back. The chart shows that effect for the number of sales you enter.

What about swapping one crypto for another?

A swap is treated as a sale of the coin you give up, so TDS can apply to it, and how the deduction is made depends on the exchange. This calculator only looks at the total sale value you enter, so use the sale value your exchange reports.

Not tax advice. The 1% rate and the Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000 thresholds were checked against the Income Tax Department's published text of Section 194S. This tool works from totals you enter and does not model exchange fees or how a particular exchange handles swaps. Confirm with a Chartered Accountant.
